And it seemed like only yesterday...

The year was 1956. The day was May 5th. Many of the top surfers at Malibu made balsa wood boards right on the beach. One day one of their compatriots, Dave Sweet, showed up with a marbleized abstract pigment "mystery board" that was significantly lighter and more maneuverable than all the other boards being surfed. Everyone marveled at the amount of control he had over the board. All of his fellow board builders had questions, but Dave just disappeared from the beach after he got out of the water. He had to get back to work on his project, which he had been working on for two years, since 1954. This went on day after day for a week or so while Dave tested his new invention. Finally he showed up with the first polyurethane surfboard ever to be manufactured for retail and he sold it on the beach at Malibu………..And surfing changed from wood to foam.

Dave Sweet was the first man to ever ride a polyurethane foam surfboard, as we know them today. He was the first man to manufacture a near-to-shape foam blank which he then hand shaped to the customers exact specifications, without losing the high density outer foam. This was a technique that none of the other later foam manufacturers ever perfected. He IS the Father of Foam!

From 2000

To

2007

Dave Sweet is going back to his roots, his Malibu Chips roots, where he and Joe Quigg, and Matt Kivlin, and Dave Rochlen, and a few others sat at the feet of their mentor, Bob Simmons on the beach at Malibu, learning how to shape wooden surfboards.

Dave is making his first balsa board in over fifty years. This classic surfboard will be his first signed and numbered balsawood Signature Model...ever! He has plans for two of them...No.1 and No.2. When these two boards are sold Dave will let the collector's market decide whether or not he continues with this rare Limited Edition. If he does, this collection of numbered treasures will end at No.5.

Signature Model No.1

As you can see, board No.1 is finished. It is exquisite!!! Or awesome!!!

The glassing and polishing are both heirloom quality! The shape for this classic Dave Sweet came from a 1962 template. Dave knows every curve, angle, and slope of this board like he knows the back of his hand. He could shape this board blindfolded......in another time.

Length...9'5"

Width...23"

Nose...17.5"

Tail...15.5"

Dave Today

Dave Sweet rang the birthday bell on the first day of winter, Dec. 21st, 2006...his 78th season. Unfortunately on March 27th, 2005 Dave suffered a stroke, which put a definite crimp in his dance step. The stroke took away the shaping capabilities of the master. It robbed Dave of his afternoon walk out to the edge of the Palisades' cliff to check out the swell. It took away his ability to drive down to Duke's in Malibu for a Long Island Ice Tea, and a walk on the Malibu pier to check out the surf at the Point. Dave's stroke put a definite dent in the mobilty of a very mobile man.

What the stroke didn't take away is Dave's calculating mind, and his remarkable skill to read the rail of any surfboard ever made. Nor did the stroke take away his spirit and love for the sport of surfing! It did not touch the immense catalog of board templates stored in that head of his. It did not stop him from his plans to leave the surfing world with a little blast from the past! Dave Sweet is just no longer able to wield the tools or the sanding blocks to make these last couple of boards himself...

Robin Mair Designs

Therefore, to see his plans for an old style balsawood surfboard come to fruition, Dave put out a search for a master woodworker. He found one who met his needs in Robin Mair, on the north shore of Kauai. Robin, from South Africa, has been shaping surfboards for over 40 years. He has perfected his expertise in every aspect of building a board, from laminating to glossing and polishing, from rough sanding to master shaper. Robin Mair is a craftsman of wood.

Travelling the world he has created 72' wood racing sailboats, along with old style wooden boats. He has fashioned acoustical and classic guitars from start to finish. When Felipe Pomar and other big wave artists in Hawaii need guns of wood, Robin is the the one they seek out.

Robin Mair was exactly who Dave was looking for...

Robin procurred the hollow balsawood blank from Balsaflite, run for over twenty years by Andres "Skip" Kozminski in the forests of Ecuador. After discussing the template dimensions with Dave over the phone, Robin found a Randy Rarrick restored Dave Sweet surfboard on Oahu owned by Michael Malsie. The specs on that board matched what Dave was looking for, so Robin was able to get an exact template from it. From there Robin's shaping skills took over and he was able to create the exact shape Dave had in mind. Robin then turned the glassing and finishing over to John Delaney who outdid himself on this work of art.

Robin Mair is a technical perfectionist and Dave's Signature Model No.1 shows it!

For the Serious Collector Only!

This final edition of Signature Models is being made purely for the serious collector. The collector who wants that one-of-a-kind gem!

No.1 and No.2 will be sold to the highest bidders. The first board is slated for auction on E-Bay in a couple of weeks, unless someone knocks Dave's socks off with a monster bid before the auction is listed. The second board may appear in an Oahu collector's event, but nothing is cast in stone!

To say that board No.1 is a rare piece in the world of surfing would be grossly understating the issue! There has never been one like it! Nor will there ever be!

Signature Model No.1 will be shipped to the winning bidder from Kauai to anywhere in the world, encased in its own custom-made wooden box. Included in the sale will be a Letter of Authenticity, detailing the history and pedigree of the board and blank, signed by Dave Sweet and Robin Mair. Also there will be a Photo CD showing the progression of the blank during the shaping process.

IF THE NEW OWNER WISHES , No.1 will be shipped to Southern California where it can be picked up directly from Dave, at his home in Pacific Palisades. You can pick up the board from the creator just like in the ol' days. At Dave Sweet Surfboards we aims to please!

Important Note

After expenses, the proceeds for this classic edition of balsawood surfboards will be used to help defray the hospital and medical costs incurred from Dave's stroke. Your kokua will be deeply appreciated!
